How to Paint Furniture

By The Kearns Team via HomeActions - October 22, 2021

Paint is the single-least-expensive way to improve the look of anything. Whenever you want to add a new look to a room, you paint it first. But old stained and worn furniture can use the same kind of care to give it a new lease on life. If you have old furniture or like to hunt for treasures at the flea market, consider painting your items by following these steps.

Clean and prep

Before painting furniture, clean it well. Paint won't adhere if there is any grease or dirt on the wood. Remove doors, drawers and shelves and then spray the surface with mineral spirits and wipe it quickly with a soft cloth to avoid soaking the wood. A scouring pad will help get off any stubborn dirt.

Sand

To ensure that the wood's surface is the right texture for paint to stick to, sand the furniture before priming and painting. Rough newer pieces with a sanding block. You may want to use an orbital sander for older pieces or those whose veneer you've had to repair with wood putty.

Prime

To ensure a smooth finish on your painted furniture, prime it first. Talk to the experts at your paint store to ensure you have the primer you need. You may need to use a specially designed adhesion primer or a primer specifically for cabinets.

Paint

The final step is, of course, to paint your furniture. You can choose any color that matches your décor, but make sure the paint you select works for furniture that will get a lot of use. Latex furniture paint will work for most things and choosing a high gloss will make it easier to clean. Enamel paint is also a good choice for some projects.
